MEDIA STATEMENT11 February 2026 - PENAMPANG:
Parti Warisan’s Penampang Division has urged the State Government,
relevant local authorities and parties involved in the Pan Borneo
Highway project to give immediate attention to the condition of the
drainage system at Kampung Kolopis in the interest of public safety
and infrastructure protection.

The
party’s Inobong District Election Coordinator, Simon Peter said
proactive and regular monitoring of drainage systems in the area is
necessary to reduce the risk of flash floods, particularly during the
monsoon season.

“Residents
of Soboong Kolopis have raised concerns regarding drainage along the
village road which they believe is not functioning effectively.

During
our site visit, we observed stagnant water in the drain suggesting
that water flow may be impeded and that maintenance attention may be
required.

These
concerns are understandable as prolonged heavy rainfall during the
monsoon season could increase the risk of flooding and potentially
affect the integrity of the newly sealed village road,” he said.

Meanwhile,
Penampang Division committee member Michael Tann Jr. noted that
Kampung Kolopis warrants closer monitoring given the scale of
earthworks associated with the ongoing Pan Borneo Highway project.

“Large-scale
excavation, hill cutting and concreting works have altered surface
conditions in and around the village. As such, it is important that
drainage and runoff systems in affected areas are reviewed and
maintained to ensure they continue to function as intended.

In
this regard, contractors involved in the project should work closely
with the relevant authorities to address any drainage issues
identified, including carrying out necessary clearing works where
appropriate,” he said.

Michael
added that improved coordination between implementing agencies,
contractors and local communities would help prevent avoidable
impacts on residents and village infrastructure.

He
also said the division is considering the establishment of a
monitoring unit in the village to monitor the progress of the
project, its impact and facilitate communication between villagers
and division leaders.

In
the visit, Simon and Michael were accompanied by Warisan Central
Strategic Communication Director Christopher Masudal, Warisan
Penampang Division Chief Jeffrey Leiking and Wanita Warisan
Information Chief Agnes Kinsil.
