KOTA KINABALU: The attempt to differentiate between the terms "poor school" and "dilapidated building" has been criticized as an effort to distort the real issue regarding the condition of schools in Sabah.
According to the statement, the action of the Sabah Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk James Ratib, in trying to distinguish between the two terms only highlights the government's failure to address the real reality of the poor school problem in the state.
It was stated that the public is not easily deceived by wordplay because what is seen on the ground is the condition of damaged school buildings, unsafe electrical wiring systems, collapsed ceilings, dilapidated toilets, and a learning environment that can endanger students and teachers.
According to the statement, when a school has damaged and unsafe buildings, that situation still constitutes a poor school issue that requires serious attention and immediate action.
It added that changing the terminology will not change the fact that many children in Sabah still have to learn in conditions of severe lack and risk.
The statement also expressed disappointment that after incidents or tragedies occur, there are still parties more concerned with defending the administration's image and finding excuses to deny the problems that have long plagued schools in Sabah.
It stated that the government should focus on concrete solutions, including expediting repair work, upgrading school facilities, ensuring safety inspections are conducted regularly, and providing sufficient allocations for the safety and welfare of students.
According to the statement, the safety of children cannot be compromised, and their lives and futures are far more important than efforts to cover up weaknesses through wordplay.
The statement firmly asserted that the public wants action and not just excuses.
