PRESS RELEASE: KKIA
Lapses Embarrassing, Sabah Tourism Minister Must Act Now — Junz
Wong

KOTA
KINABALU, 26 April 2026: Warisan Vice President Datuk Junz Wong has
called for the immediate intervention of the Sabah Tourism Minister
following a troubling public complaint highlighting service failures
at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA).

Wong
said the incident - raised by a disgruntled and concerned Sabahan
traveller - reflects a serious breakdown in basic airport operations
and frontline service standards, which cannot be ignored.

According
to the complaint, passengers arriving on an international flight were
left confused at the baggage claim area due to incorrect flight
information displayed on conveyor belts, while airport personnel
allegedly refused to assist, dismissing the issue as “not their
problem”.

“This
is not a minor inconvenience - this is a fundamental failure in
passenger handling at Sabah’s main international gateway,” Wong
said.

He
pointed out the stark contrast with the swift response by the federal
authorities following the recent baggage chaos at Kuala Lumpur
International Airport (KLIA), where Transport Minister Anthony Loke
ordered an immediate probe and stressed that such lapses had “clearly
failed” expected service standards.

“Passengers
deserve clarity, assistance and professionalism - not confusion,
indifference and finger-pointing,” Wong added.

The
Tanjung Aru Assemblyman stressed that KKIA, as the primary entry
point into Sabah, plays a critical frontline role in shaping first
impressions of the state, especially as Sabah positions itself
prominently under Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

“At
a time when we are actively promoting Sabah to the world, such
embarrassing lapses send the wrong message and risk undermining our
tourism credibility,” he said.

He
urged the Sabah Tourism Ministry to take immediate ownership of the
issue and to work with all relevant agencies, including airport
operators and ground handlers, to:

*
Ensure accurate and real-time passenger information systems

*
Strengthen frontline staff accountability and responsiveness

*
Establish clear SOPs to prevent buck-passing between agencies

*
Implement swift corrective measures with measurable outcomes

“This
is not about assigning blame - it is about restoring confidence. A
gateway airport cannot afford a culture where problems belong to no
one,” Wong stressed.

He
further called for a comprehensive review of operational standards at
KKIA, warning that repeated lapses, if left unaddressed, could erode
Sabah’s competitiveness as a tourism destination.

“Sabah
deserves better. Our visitors deserve better. And the time to fix
this is now,” he said.
