Luyang Rep: Sabah Must Not Become a Base for Scam Syndicates
Luyang Assemblyman Samuel Wong has commended the swift action by authorities following the arrest of 80 individuals linked to a scam syndicate impersonating Chinese police officers at a resort in Tawau.
He said the successful operation reflects the commitment and effectiveness of enforcement agencies, particularly in tackling increasingly sophisticated cross-border criminal activities.
“At a time when such syndicates are becoming more organized and transnational, this operation sends a strong message that Sabah will not tolerate such illegal activities,” he said in a statement today.
While welcoming the decisive action, Wong stressed that the case also highlights the need to further strengthen preventive mechanisms, particularly in immigration monitoring and enforcement coordination.
“The focus now should be on building a more robust system, one that not only responds effectively, but also prevents such groups from establishing operations in the first place,” he added.
Wong proposed several improvements, including:
• Stricter entry declaration requirements: Foreign visitors should clearly state their purpose of visit, detailed address of stay, and intended duration, supported by proper documentation
• Enhanced monitoring during stay: Authorities should conduct periodic checks on long-term stays and group accommodations, especially in high-risk sectors
• Improved compliance by accommodation operators: Hotels and resorts must strictly adhere to guest registration procedures and report suspicious activities promptly
He emphasized that Sabah must take proactive steps to ensure it does not become a target for organised crime.
“We do not want Sabah to mushroom into a hub for illegal and inhumane activities such as scams. We must protect our beautiful home and uphold the dignity of our people,” he said.
Wong also reminded that foreign nationals must respect local laws and not take Sabah’s hospitality for granted.
“Sabah is no place for such activities. Enforcement must continue to be carried out with the highest priority,” he added.
He urged all relevant authorities to continue strengthening existing systems and safeguards to ensure the long-term safety, reputation, and integrity of Sabah.
