MEDIA STATEMENT: I take seriously the statement issued by Chong Eng Leong regarding the findings of the 2013 Sabah Royal Commission of Inquiry on Illegal Immigrants, which once again raises a critical issue concerning the issuance of blue identity cards to foreigners through questionable methods.
In this regard, I urge the Ministry of Home Affairs Malaysia to take the RCI findings fully seriously and not underestimate the significant implications for the rule of law and the integrity of the country’s electoral system.
The Ministry must ensure that all cases involving the use of statutory declarations and “Late Registration” without the confirmation of the Magistrate’s Court are thoroughly, transparently, and accountably reviewed. Immediate and strict action must be taken against any party involved in the unlawful issuance of identification documents.
I also call for a comprehensive cleansing effort targeting the category known as “phantom voters,” particularly those who obtained blue ICs through questionable channels. The national voter register cannot continue to be tainted by ineligible individuals, as this undermines the foundation of democracy and the legitimate rights of Sabahans.
In the context of the introduction of the new MyKad, this represents the best opportunity for the government, particularly through the Ministry of Home Affairs, to undertake a comprehensive reform of the system and ensure that only legitimate citizens are recognized as voters.
Transparency, accountability, and political courage are essential to ensure that this issue does not recur, in order to safeguard national sovereignty and restore the confidence of Sabahans in government institutions.
