Sekong Assemblyman Goes Down to the Field to Help Extinguish Fire in Kampung Bahagia, Nearly 1,000 Houses Affected
SANDAKAN, April 19 — A major fire that struck Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan, has caused significant destruction with an estimated at least 1,000 houses engulfed in flames in an incident that occurred since yesterday.
The Member of the State Assembly (ADUN) for Sekong, Alias Haji Sani, was reported to be at the scene with village residents, directly involved in efforts to save lives and control the fire from spreading further.
According to his statement, the rescue efforts were carried out under extremely challenging conditions due to strong winds and closely packed house structures, causing the fire to spread rapidly. The villagers acted collectively by dividing roles into several groups, including spraying water, breaking down house walls, and controlling the fire from the roof.
A viral video on social media, uploaded by Facebook user Fikri Arunarsin, shows Alias Haji Sani alongside residents working tirelessly to break down house structures as a measure to prevent the fire from spreading to areas that were still safe. This action is believed to be an emergency strategy to cut off the fire's path.
The video has gained widespread attention, with many netizens praising his bravery and commitment to physically helping in a high-risk situation.
In his statement, he also expressed his sorrow for the affected residents and urged them to remain strong in facing this trial. He emphasized the importance of a spirit of togetherness and reliance on God in facing this disaster.
