KUALA LUMPUR, February 4, 2026: President of Warisan, Shafie Apdal, emphasized that any decision involving the Indonesia-Malaysia border issue must be made with utmost caution and fully comply with existing legal provisions.
According to him, the Federal Constitution clearly sets out guidelines that cannot be disregarded, particularly referring to Article 36(1) and Article 2(b), which stipulate that any changes can only be made with the consent of the Sabah State Assembly and the approval of the Conference of Rulers.
“We follow the existing rules and laws. This provision is very clear and important for the future and to respect our national Constitution,” he said while discussing the matter.
Shafie also stressed that he has no intention of raising unrelated issues, but rather wants to focus on the constitutional aspects that he believes cannot be taken lightly. While respecting the explanation provided by the Right Honourable Prime Minister, he expressed his concerns about the constitutional implications if a decision is made without thorough consideration.
“I am concerned from a constitutional standpoint. This issue is not a trivial matter and needs to be examined in depth,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Speaker stated that the issue is technical in nature and requires careful examination, while requesting that it not be debated further at this time as many members have not had sufficient preparation. He noted that a debate without comprehensive understanding would only prolong discussions without reaching a clear decision.
In this regard, the Speaker suggested that the issue be referred to a Special Select Committee to allow all relevant parties to be called and the matter to be examined in detail. The results of that discussion can then be presented back in the House if necessary, to avoid prolonged debates without resolution.
