MEDIA STATEMENT: MARCH 3, 2026 - WIRA WARISAN CALLS FOR WATER, ELECTRICITY BILL REBATES FOR FLOOD VICTIMS
The flood disaster that recently struck Sipitang, Beaufort, and Tenom is not just a natural calamity but has now become a financial burden that weighs heavily on thousands of families in Sabah.
Houses damaged, furniture destroyed, electrical appliances submerged, vehicles affected. At the same time, many have lost their sources of income as business premises had to close and jobs were disrupted.
Even more heartbreaking, this disaster occurred while Muslims were observing the month of Ramadan and preparing for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Is it fair for flood victims who are struggling to rise again to also be burdened with water and electricity bills as usual?
In this regard, I urge the Sabah State Government to immediately implement special rebates on water and electricity bills for all affected flood victims, as an immediate and practical step to alleviate their burdens.
This step is not something extraordinary as it has been swiftly implemented in several states in Peninsular Malaysia during major floods. Therefore, the people of Sabah also deserve the same concern and action without distinction.
Utility rebates are highly significant as they can reduce the pressure of living costs for the people while they are trying to repair their homes, revive their businesses, and return to their normal lives.
The government must act promptly and proactively by adopting a more caring and fair approach to ensure the welfare of the people of Sabah is always protected, especially in disaster situations beyond their control.
The priority at this time is to help the people rise again, not to add to the existing burdens.
